Britain is currently experiencing the coldest winter in over one hundred years. Grinding transport infrastructures to a halt, supermarket shelves stripped bare and a greater risk of slips, trips and falls on icy roads, how do experts advise citizens to weather the 'big freeze'?

Naturally, the first piece of advice that charities and weather experts are promoting to chilly Britons is to keep warm. Wearing multiple layers of thin clothing – rather than one chunky jumper - is an ideal way to trap heat; known as the 'string vest effect'. Don't be afraid to wear fingerless gloves and hats indoors when the mercury drops below -10c outside and you can see your breath indoors.

Experts are also encouraging neighbours and family members to do what they can to look after elderly people and other vulnerable members of the community. Checking up on older people who may not be able to leave their homes is recommended, as is taking in some hot soup or a flask of tea if that person usually receives meals on wheels or regular visits from a carer. In the event that gritters cannot clear roadways, do what you can to clear paths so travel on foot is a little easier.

Finally, with the 'big freeze' expected to stretch right into the middle of spring next year it's vital to plan ahead. Panic buying often results in food wastage, but if you can stock up on tinned goods and the odd ready meal or loaf for freezing, you'll be better prepared should the weather prevent supermarkets from receiving deliveries. Newspapers have increasingly reported on likely shortages of gas, domestic oil and even petrol. In situations such as these, home owners living in isolated locations should consider investing in backup generators to prevent a black out and loss of heating should oil shortage become a reality.
